Buck Sighting at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge:

Over the weekend, I traveled to the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in search of peace & tranquility. I was looking to reunite with Mother Earth.

While walking along Ocean View Loop Trail, I connected with this buck feeding in the brush. It was amazing!

Did you know, from the 1600's to the 1800's, Sachuest Point was used for farming & sheep grazing? During World War II, the Navy used the site as a rifle range & communications center. A Walk Along Ocean View Loop Trail was Good Medicine:

I traveled to the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in hopes of photographing some relatives. The walk along Ocean View Loop Trail, was all that I needed. Being able to close my eyes while listening to the sounds of the waves crashing along the shore, smelling the ocean air, & feeling the breeze blow across my sun lite face was good medicine!

Did you know, “the town of Ashfield is part of the ancestral homeland of the Nipmuc People. Also known as ‘the Freshwater People, our history dates back thousands of years. We inhabited a region that includes parts of present day central & western MA, CT, & RI.

Did you know, Nipmuc spiritual beliefs & practices reflect a respect for Okasoh Ohke (Mother Earth) & the cycles of seasons. Agricultural innovation, hunting, fishing, quillwork, basket weaving, & dynamic storytelling through drumming, dance, & song are hallmarks of Nipmuc culture. 

Did you know, in the mid-17th century, the Nipmuc were among the earliest Indigenous People to have their way of life devastated by fatal diseases, colonization, & bloody warfare.

Did you know, an estimated 1,000 Nipmuc who did not oppose the colonists were betrayed, forcibly removed from their homes, & imprisoned on Boston’s Deer Island. Hundreds died from starvation & exposure to extreme cold or sold into slavery in the West Indies. 

Did you know, today, despite the devastation from colonization, cultural cleansing, & displacement, the Nipmuc People are State recognized, well, & thriving. We continue to advocate for our rights & work to preserve our cultural heritage.

While attending a Wetu Building Workshop, sponsored by workshop leader Andre StrongBearHeart Gaines, Jr., @no_loose_braids, I was fortunate to witness a field at Deer Run Farm being sun kissed by the early morning light. 

Did you know, “the town of Millis is part of the ancestral homeland of the Nipmuc People. Also known as ‘the Freshwater People, our history dates back thousands of years. We inhabited a region that includes parts of present day central & western Massachusetts, CT, & Rhode Island.

Did you know, Nipmuc spiritual beliefs & practices reflect an unwavering respect for Okasoh Ohke (Mother Earth) & the cycles of seasons. While traveling to the Narragansett Powwow in Charlestown, RI, I drove by this beautiful field of white flowers shimmering in the early morning light.

Did you know, “the Narragansett’s ancestral homeland is the state of RI? It’s been established that the Narragansett People have lived in this region for over 30,000 years.” - https://narragansettindiannation.org/

Did you know, “the first documented contact with the Indians of RI happened in 1524 when Giovanni de Verrazano visited Narragansett Bay & described a large Indian population, living by agriculture & hunting, & organized under powerful ‘kings?’” - https://narragansettindiannation.org/

Did you know, “the tribe was known as warriors within the region. The Narragansett customarily offered protection to smaller tribes in the area.” - https://narragansettindiannation.org/

Did you know, “tribal members had 2 homes: a winter & summer home?
